Also mentions cannon relics washed ashore near Pointe Auzanglais after a great storm and a volatile grain and market report from the Franco market with June wheat pricing.
In Washington the Medical Examiners boards are to be reorganized with two Democrats and two Republicans on each panel. The Postmaster General plans stricter scrutiny for postal appointees, including two examinations, full life and character details, and temporary to permanent placement. Also noted are marches for Emancipation Day, the Wales case awaiting Supreme Court action, and local burglaries in Mount Pleasant and Chattanooga.
A large fire destroyed the five story Lithographers and Engravers building on Exchange Street. Firemen battled the blaze as walls toppled and engravers’ and printers’ rooms burned. Mr Matthews and several workers escaped with injuries to one son. Loss is estimated at $290,000 with $10,000 insured.
