The article recounts a decisive Republican surge in yesterday's city election, noting turnout near presidential levels and a scattered Democratic effort. It highlights ward races, especially Fourth Ward council contests, and mentions a potential recount amid scratching ballots and local political tensions.
In a dense returns listing, Ward tickets show Teehan and Prince among council picks with varying majorities. School Board and assessor results reveal mixed outcomes, with Republicans claiming several seats while Democrats gain in other wards. The final council will be ten Republicans to eight Democrats, with school board seats split accordingly.
Election notes report 509 unscratched Republican ballots in the Fifth ward and Brigham as the city’s first Black officeholder from the Fourth ward. The council would have gerrymandered if Democrats won. Other items include circus-like civic praise, theatre reviews for Cinderella at Black’s Opera House and A Cold Day When We Get Left at the Grand, plus obituaries and local notices.
