At the national convention the room erupts as Job Hedges names Root for temporary chairman amid calls for Roosevelt. Delegates shout support and opposition, while Francis Weney of California and others address the floor. The roll call, order issues, and credential battles unfold with protests, interruptions, and shifting alliances.
The general convention clash grows as Roosevelt followers bolt after Roosevelt signals, while Johnson hints at a new Republican party. Iowa Cummins delegates back Roosevelt, but disputes over California seats and permanent organization shape the race. Rumors say Latt may quit, Hadley considered, and Cummins forces push for Chicago. Taft and Roosevelt vie for control as private lobbying sways delegates.
As we go to press at 4 30 a state ment has come that the speech of McCormick stating position of the minority was heartily applauded. Thousands of Cumming residents hope for SUR Lis nomination. Most people are unsure of the outcome but we will probably know next Wednesday. Latest: Hadley moved to substitute minority report. motion was tabled.
