Fall migration brings a variety of birds through the area
Wildlife writer Ben Gelman notes that fall migration brings both resident nesting birds southward and visiting species through Southern Illinois. He describes plumage shifts, large Canada goose flocks via Crab Orchard refuge, chimney swifts roosting in town chimneys, hawks seen in late summer, and wading birds like herons and egrets returning before winter. He also cites seed studies from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, favoring white proso millet and oil sunflowers over cracked corn, and urges readers to stock feeders for winter.
