Robbery suspect dies in hospital in Cape Girardeau
A West Frankfort man involved in a high speed chase with deputies died Thursday in a Cape Girardeau hospital from injuries after a pursuit that followed an armed robbery at Benton Farm Fresh. Jeffery McElyea, 22, was shot at the tires, overturned, and found with a self inflicted gunshot wound as he exited the vehicle. The pursuit began after the Benton store robbery at about 11 a.m. Wednesday and McElyea reportedly fired at pursuing squad cars.
