Midwest EPA chief named
Vaidas V. Adamkus, a 54 year old civil engineer and expert in international pollution issues, was named the Midwest director of the Environmental Protection Agency. He will oversee pollution control programs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, replacing the acting administrator since February. The nomination was backed by Sen. Charles Percy and Gov. James Thompson.

Mobster Moran Associate Alfred Fouts Dies at 90
Dayton AP reports Alfred Fouts, once linked to Chicago crime lord George Bugs Moran, died at 90 in Dayton. Fouts and Moran shared conviction for a 1946 robbery and a 1958 bank robbery. He recalled Moran’s harassment and his own wasted years after parole.

Inmates moved but now who’s going to pay
Rock Island Sheriff Randy Heaton found 30 spaces to move inmates to comply with a federal order limiting jail population to 50. Ten will go to LaSalle County, others to Whiteside Henry and Mercer counties. Heaton questions who will bear nearly $500,000 in transport processing and housing costs.
