Allied forces strike targets in Afghanistan initial wave
The first strikes in Afghanistan involved American and British ships and submarines firing 50 Tomahawk missiles from the Arabian Sea. Rumsfeld cautioned on early results, noting no verified American aircraft losses while Afghan sources cited targets in Kandahar including the Taliban HQ and airport facilities. The aim was to hamper air defenses, reduce Taliban military capabilities, and raise costs for terrorists while aiding future planning against al Qaida and supporting anti-Taliban groups.
