Reclaimed land improves with age in Illinois study

A five year study by University of Illinois agronomists found reclaimed strip mine land can develop subsoils that, with careful mixing, yield equal or better crops than some natural soils. Results from five plots in southern and western Illinois show average yields of 35 bushels per acre for soybeans and 110 bushels for corn, with irrigation boosting corn to 191 bushels. The project, funded by five coal companies, may face questions over industry funding.

DuPage teachers end seven day strike by court order

A DuPage County judge ordered Marquardt District 15 to reopen schools and resume bargaining after seven days of walkouts by striking teachers seeking higher pay. The judge also barred the board from holding disciplinary hearings for 15 nontenured teachers and urged talks to resume, with no new meetings scheduled yet. In Westville, seven non-tenured teachers continued to defy back-to-work notices as the board planned disciplinary action.
