West Frankfort history study uncovers Lincoln links and coal era roots
West Frankfort’s history project traces the town from its 1804 white settlement to the coal era. Researchers cite a possible Lincoln stay at the Dimmick Inn predecessor, the 19th century Shawneetown Kaskaskia Trail, railroad impact in 1895, and a 1925 peak population of 24,000, with current residents about 9,000. Proceeds support the local historical society.
