Pilot defuses prison break with hijacker killed by pilot
Allen Barklage, a former Vietnam fighter pilot, shot and killed Barbara Oswald during a hijacked helicopter escape from Marion federal penitentiary. He wrestled the weapon from her as inmates awaited entry to the yard and landed the chopper safely outside the prison fence. Oswald, 42, from Richmond Heights Missouri, chartered the flight and claimed expertise in flying while seeking to pick up accomplices near Cape Girardeau. The three inmates were identified and confined. Barklage and the aircraft were returned to St. Louis.
