Illinois to install six new weather observation stations
Dixon Springs in Johnson County will host one of six Illinois weather observation stations linking to a National Weather Service computer in Washington. Nine other sites are at Urbana, Elwood, near Chicago, Brownstown, near Vandalia, DeKalb, Kilbourne in Mason County, and potential future sites include Carbondale. The network, coordinated by Marlowe Thorne of the University of Illinois Extension Service, could expand to 15 stations and cooperate with multiple universities, agri businesses, and private observers. Data collected will include temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, humidity, dew point and wind, transmitted by touch-tone telephone to a central computer for forecasts and agricultural advisories used by media and farmers.
