Hydro project drop kills Goreville lake idea
Engineers concluded a Goreville water lake could not economically justify hydroelectric power. The plan would require a 30 million gallon per day channel, a 30 foot diameter conduit 8,000 feet long, massive dam and turbine costs, and would produce about 12 thousand dollars in annual energy revenue versus bond interest of around four million dollars per year.

Du Quoin teachers weigh grievance over pay cuts
Du Quoin educators discuss a formal grievance claiming the school board violated contracts by eliminating several salary increments. The board also cut summer work for staff and multiple coaching stipends as part of 110000 in education fund cuts for 1981 82 while approving higher fees and ticket prices to raise about 45000. The DEA plans talks before filing, while the superintendent says contract language limits how such cuts can be made.
