State health coverage contract changes under review
The Thompson administration plans to sign a contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield to reduce hospitalization benefits for about 145000 state employees while expanding outpatient coverage. The plan aims to save about 11 million in taxpayer funds, with a $1000 annual employee cap and $2500 for families, balancing higher deductibles with broader outpatient care and no change to psychiatric benefits.

House OKs bill hiking school district levies
The Illinois House passed legislation guiding school district funding with a 96 to 37 vote and sent it to the Senate. It would allow unit districts to set tax rates up to twice the current dual district rate, up to 1.84 dollars per 100 of assessed valuation for the education fund, with backdoor referenda required for increases. The bill also doubles transportation tax, raises building and life safety levies to new caps, all subject to petition votes.
