Mosquito Season Looms Over Carbondale Area
In Southern Illinois a mild winter and wet spring boost the mosquito population. Carbondale Abatement District manager William Kelley says larva-targeted control and storm drain treatment have been ongoing for a month. Mosquito season runs from early May to late October, with West Nile virus a ongoing risk. Illinois saw 884 human cases in 2002 and 67 deaths, then 225 cases and 12 deaths last year. Public Health monitors vectors and animals for virus activity as health risks rise seasonally.

Illinois voters may face gay marriage question on ballot
Protect Marriage Illinois filed 421801 signatures to place an advisory referendum on the November ballot asking the General Assembly to define marriage as between a man and a woman in the state constitution.
