Severe storms and tornadoes raked Southern Illinois Tuesday night leaving two dead and more than 40 injured. Mariam Houchins, 65, was found in a ravine near Mermet and Hillerman. her car and mobile home were destroyed. Steve Kohn, 53, died protecting his son as a chimney collapsed. Danny, age eight, sustained two broken arms. Two storm lines moved northeast from Cape Girardeau and southeast from near St Louis, sweeping the region.
A Cairo high school computer science teacher, Steve Kohn, 53, died at his home when a chimney collapsed during a violent storm Tuesday night. Kohn, who taught 15 years and led the Cairo Association of Teachers, was protecting his 8-year-old son Danny who survived with two broken arms.
Final autopsy results confirm 17 year old Scott Rosenberger of Elverado died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy after collapsing during baseball practice. In a separate case Carbondale coach DeWayne Kelly died from arteriosclerotic coronary artery disease at Carbondale High School.
