Climbing safety urged for Shawnee hikers after falls and rescues
Officials warn hikers to wear proper footwear and stay on maintained trails in Shawnee National Forest after multiple fall incidents near Camel Rock and Chimney Rock. Rescues include LifeFlight airlifts, 2 hour secured recoveries, and 25 minute to 2 hour procedures. Many victims have cellphones but reception is unreliable in remote areas. Forest Service experts emphasize planning, water, food, and sticking to maintained trails while noting timber rattlesnakes on Gardens of the Gods rocks.
