Metropolis Plant Costs Contrasted in AEC Review

The Atomic Energy Commission estimates 25 million yearly to buy uranium hexafluoride from the Allied Chemical Co. plant in Metropolis, a facility employing 250 people and costing about 3 million annually in Southern Illinois. The contract ends March 31, 1964, with lawmakers urging renewal. The AEC argues demand is down and private supply suffices through 1970, suggesting keeping the Metropolis plant as a contingency.
