Suburb sterilizes deer instead of killing them in Highland Park
Highland Park officials sterilize 20 white tail does as part of a nonlethal deer management project with the University of Wisconsin Madison and Milwaukee County Zoo. Dr. Bob MacLean, a UW veterinarian, says sterilization may reduce populations long term. fourteen does have been treated since late January as the study aims to prove effectiveness for possible state and federal adoption. Deer in Illinois are abundant with an estimated 750,000 statewide, while suburban herds surge and the town faces prior lawsuits over killing deer.
