Supreme Court Upholds FTC Action Against AMA Ethics Rules
The AMA challenged FTC cease and desist orders as beyond agency authority and argued it had already halted many challenged ethics standards. The Second Circuit upheld the order on Oct 7, 1980, and today the Supreme Court, in a ruling issued without a written opinion, affirmed the appeals court but limited to this case with no future implication. The AMA contended it regulates doctor consumer relations, noting a large physician membership and warning that overreach would harm the public.
