Health notes show rising life expectancy and falling infant deaths

A 1983 analysis finds a newborn can expect to live 74.7 years with girls at 78.3 and boys at 71.0. Whites outlive blacks but the gap narrows from 8.4 to 5.6 years since 1950. 65 year olds in 1983 may live 16.8 more years, up from 15.2 in 1970. Infant mortality falls to 10.9 per 1000 live births from 11.2 in 1982.

Heckler cites alarming teen cocaine use and plans new anti drug efforts

Health and Human Services Secretary Margaret Heckler told a Senate subcommittee that a survey found 6 percent of high school seniors used cocaine last year. She warned the drug, once expensive, is more available at lower prices and spreading beyond the affluent to vulnerable teens.

Treating infected mothers to curb infant hepatitis

CHICAGO AP Mothers who are silent carriers of hepatitis B could mainly prevent passing it to newborns with immediate treatment. Thousands live with the disease, few die, but many become carriers risking chronic liver disease or cancer. Dr Saul Krugman notes carriers can look healthy and infect babies who show no illness. AIDS appears unlikely to spread by casual contact after French studies found no infection in U S medical workers exposed before contagion was known.
