Stocks rebound as S P predicts end to write-downs

A fractious Wall Street rallied from an early plunge to close higher as Standard & Poor's projected writedowns of subprime asset backed securities totaling up to 285 billion globally, signaling the end may be in sight for major banks. The Dow rose 35.50 to 12,145.74, while the S&P 500 gained 6.71 to 1,315.48 and the Nasdaq climbed 19.74 to 2,263.61 amid firmer commodities and dollar weakness.

Grain futures mixed on CBOT with wheat drop and corn gain

Agricultural futures in Chicago traded mixed on Thursday at the Board of Trade. May wheat fell 38.5 cents to 12.44 a bushel, May corn rose 2.25 cents to 5.695 a bushel, May oats slipped 0.75 cent to 4.01 a bushel, and May soybeans jumped 7.75 cents to 14.0275 a bushel.
