Fire claims life of 5-year-old in house blaze
Theresa Wilkins mother of missing D J, 5, learned of the tragedy as flames erupted when 23-year-old April Trexler dropped cigarettes and a lighter sparks ignited a couch. Trexler, Keith and others battled the fire but the house burned rapidly. D J was later found dead after initial searches suggested he may have run toward Clark Street.

Jackson County crime up 30 percent spurs tax measure
Jackson County crime rose 30 percent amid calls for a half-cent sales tax to fund deputies. The March 16 ballot asks voters to approve the levy expected to raise about $2 million annually, with about $927,000 for six deputies, an investigator, jail staff, and related costs.
