Williamson County State's Attorney Garnall celebrated after the Fifth District Appellate Court, following Illinois Supreme Court guidance, reversed its prior ruling in the Richard Nitz case. The court ruled that any error in juror unanimity on brutal or heinous conduct did not alter Nitz’s life sentence for the 1988 slaying of Michael Miley, 23, of Murphysboro, and he will serve life at Menard.
