The Cornbelt carcass market showed weakness with prices down about 0.50. Carcass values ranged from 49.25 to 57.03 for various fresh cuts. Negotiated purchases totaled 11,681 head with steady demand for light offerings and mixed prices across weight categories from 26.00 to 36.50 per hundredweight.
Soybean futures surged for a second day on the Chicago Board of Trade while grains mixed. Wheat declined, corn edged higher after Thursday's drop, and oats fell as May deliveries showed shifting prices. May soybeans climbed to 4.65 per bushel, wheat fell to 2.77 3/4, corn rose to 2.08 1/4, oats dropped to 2.06 1/4.

Kmart will shut 284 stores nationwide as part of Chapter 11 restructuring, including 272 discount outlets and 12 Supercenters. Illinois stores on the hit list include one in Centralia and three in Carbondale, West Frankfort, and Mount Vernon are spared for now. Company expects 9 percent of its 250,000 workforce to be cut and projects $550 million in sales from closings in 2002 with ongoing $45 million annual savings thereafter.
