Hall of Fame finally honors Slaughter and Vaughan
Enos Slaughter and Arky Vaughan were elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in a year when Slaughter achieved Baseball immortality after a long ballot wait. Vaughan, who died in a 1952 boating accident, also earned induction from among about 30 candidates. Slaughter, a right fielder with a .300 career average over 19 seasons, is hailed for his 1946 World Series heroics with the Cardinals. Vaughan, a shortstop with a .318 career mark, led the NL in 1935 with a .385 season.
