The Illinois House approved a bill to end the state sales tax on medicine and select foods starting Aug 1, with phased removal for fresh produce and all groceries by Aug 1, 1982. The measure, backed by Sen Langmeister and Rep Darrow, would reimburse local governments for lost revenue and may join other relief efforts pending Senate action.

House OKs farm tax lid study

The House voted to authorize a 10-member bi‑chamber committee to study the 1977 farmland assessment formula and its implications. Rep. Larry R. Stuffle led the measure after backing an 8 percent temporary cap on farmland assessment boosts, with recommendations due next year. The 1977 formula tied 90 percent of tax burden to productivity, replacing market value assessments and triggering protests from farmers over anticipated increases.
