Teachers' benefit bill stalls in Illinois House vote

Springfield Illinois The House rejected a Senate backed package to raise teacher pension and disability benefits after strong lobbying by the Illinois Education Association and opposition from the Illinois Taxpayers Federation. The bill would add a dollar per month per year of service and raise disability pay from 35 to 50 percent with a 3 percent annual boost. Critics called the amendment a ripoff and warned of higher state costs while supporters argued it preserves long overdue pensions for retirees.

Income tax credits bill back to Senate in Illinois

The Illinois House narrowly approved Senate amendments to a measure granting a 1 percent investment credit, rising to 2 percent in 1985, for new or expanded facilities. Supporters say it spurs growth and boosts local revenue, while opponents warn it shifts cost to the state general fund and benefits GE. The bill returns to the Senate for final action.
