Census figures puzzle Murphysboro residents over 1950 drop
Preliminary census data show Murphysboro population slipping from 8976 in 1940 to 8417 in 1950. Chamber president Gilbert Ebersohl asks unsigned writers to submit names and family sizes to verify counts while locals cite births minus deaths, school enrollments, and new industries as factors countering a decline.

Seek Meeting To Break Deadlock On Hydrant Rate
Murphysboro city council and Water Company President L R Howson may meet next week in Murphysboro for a face to face conference on the hydrant rate dispute blocking a water franchise extension. City Attorney C Edgar White discussed the plan with Water Company Attorney George H Jirgal who said he would confer with Howson about extending hydrant contracts to 1969 or adjusting rates through the Illinois Commerce Commission. The hydrant issue remains the only point of difference as the city seeks current rate extensions until 1969 and the company seeks rate changes through regulatory review.
