Training Symphony Players Too Few Musicians
The Associated Press reports Philadelphia aims to boost string instrument training as orchestras face string player shortages. Max Aronoff founded the New School of Music in 1942 to prepare musicians for chairs in symphony groups, with 300+ enrollees from the U.S. and Canada paying about $18 weekly for the program. The article notes brass and woodwind seats fill easily, while string sections struggle to find qualified players despite many violinists in the region. It highlights the need for rhythm, intonation, and repertoire knowledge over mere technical flair.
