Alcohol may have contributed to fatal Herrin crash

A Williamson County coroner jury ruled alcohol as a possible contributing factor in the May 10 one vehicle crash on the Herrin Colp road near Herrin that fatally injured Gary L. Halstead, 39, of Carterville. The verdict followed testimony that Halstead and Lawrence Jarvis, 39, of Herrin, had frequented taverns before the accident. The cause remains undetermined as the state police reconstruction report is incomplete and the driving status at impact is not established. Jarvis had minor injuries.
