SIU horse research probes a unique breeding problem
SIU-C researchers led by Sheryl King study a seasonal breeding halt in mares called pseudo pregnancy. From November to April in Southern Illinois, mares stop cycling due to brain-triggered hormonal changes, hindering year round breeding. The SIU Horse Center hosts 15 breeding mares and two stallions, with six foals in the herd, as they seek ways to start cycling earlier and overcome the cool weather slump.
