The Illinois Senate approved a 225000 appropriation to build an addition to Jefferson School in Marion for a new special education facility serving 22 southern Illinois counties. The House passed it 141 to 6 earlier. The project features 9260 square feet for 56 to 92 pupils from preschool to eighth grade.
The Shawnee RC&D executive committee approved a forestry work plan for the coming year to accelerate timber stand treatment on private land under the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and Illinois Division of Forestry programs. A soil survey contract for Union County was signed with the Soil Conservation Service, with joint financing by Union County, Cache River Sub-District, Shawnee RC&D, and SCS. Union County is the last full site to begin a complete soil survey in the Shawnee project area. Jackson and Saline Counties are already surveyed. Pinckneyville residents faced bond forfeitures for various charges and warrants. in Murphysboro, a DUI case was recorded.
Staff Sgt Theodore Cossitt joins the Marine Recruiting Station in Carbondale after 13 months at Okinawa. He becomes the second recruiter in the Carbondale office, joining Staff Sgt Mitchell Haddock.
