No Jet Vintage Plane Visits Southern Illinois Airport
An elder statesman of the air age, a 1929 Ford Tri Motor, refueled at Southern Illinois Airport between Carbondale and Murphysboro en route to air shows and publicity stunts. The plane, built in 1929, later served as American Airlines’ aircraft, was refurbished at a cost near 120000, and will join the Smithsonian next year. Capt. Ed McNeil, a pilot with the airline, described its contrast to modern jets and its value as a public relations and antique craft.
