Marion Council approves fifth fireman over protest
Marion's City Council on Monday night approved hiring a fifth fireman despite objections from Finance Commissioner Bill Armstrong who said the $810,317 appropriation for the coming year supports four firefighters plus hospital costs. Public Safety Commissioner E Lawrence Corder and Mayor Robert Cooksey backed the addition, noting the four-man force averages 84 hours weekly and the new position would allow weekly 48- hour off periods. Fire Chief Herman May cited the need for time to conduct safety inspections and to start an educational fire prevention program. The ordinance will be public for inspection and acted on July 9. Armstrong noted the increase totals $74,000 from last year's $737,414, with $41,000 earmarked for Marion Memorial hospital.
