Illinois homeowners over mined land seek relief after collapse

Gene and Susan Fowler lost their Energy home to an abandoned coal mine collapse. Marion unit fears bond payments over $1500 tax exemption

Marion Unit 2 school officials warn that a $1500 state property tax credit could reduce revenue needed to pay $328,653 in bonds for the upcoming year. Superintendent A. C. Storme says the county could end with insufficient funds if many homeowners take the exemption. The district’s tax base rose, but exemptions may inflate the value and hurt bond payments and state aid requests. About 8,000 of 38,000 parcels have registered for the exemption with no deadline attached.
