DC-10s face two week wait for air return
Federal officials estimated on Sunday that the grounded DC-10 fleet would need about two more weeks before clearance to fly, contingent on a new engine-mount inspection program and structural improvements. An FAA consultant outlined the mandatory checks after the Chicago crash that killed 273, with potential similar defects found on United and other carriers’ jets. Foreign DC-10s can operate abroad but cannot land in the United States under the current order.
