Lee secures Olympic berth in 400 hurdles final
SIUC’s David Lee tied for third in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles at the U S Olympic Trials in Eugene, finishing behind Edwin Moses and James Walker as Moses led the field. Lee, the 1980 NCAA champion, overcame a tough lane assignment and early deficit to seal a place on the Olympic team alongside fellow Salukis Bart Williams and others. Moses, unbothered by rain, dominated despite an ankle injury and mired boycott tensions.

Trials mark set by Southern Illinoisan sports star
The rainy conditions made the track dangerous as Saluki Moses pursued a new world record in the 47.45 seconds set in Los Angeles 1977. He eyed possible 1984 Olympic participation amid strong Salukis showing including Coffman Paige and Brown. Finals loom for the men’s 110 meter hurdles and 10,000 meters and women’s 800 and javelin.

Senate OKs Hambo replacement plan gains Senate support
The Illinois Senate approved a plan to create a Hambletonian successor at Du Quoin with funding from pari mutuel betting. The measure, backed by Gov. Thompson after lobbying by Sen. Kenneth Buzbee, would funnel about 300000 to a 3 year old classic, plus 150000 for the Du Quoin Grand Circuit and 62000 for the Illinois Program, plus 25000 for promotion. It aims to attract top horses and boost Southern Illinois racing while aligning with Springfield and Indianapolis schedules.
