Illinois House approves Dunns coal tax proposal
The Illinois House voted 116 to 19 to approve a severance tax on coal mined in the state. The measure would levy a percentage tax replacing the current 1 percent sales tax, with estimated proceeds of about 9 million dollars annually to county governments and about five million more than current receipts. Opponents worry price hikes, but sponsors say tax is indexated to real property. The bill moves to the Senate which favors a different approach.
