Death Penalty Bill Defeated in Illinois Senate Vote
Sen. Robert W. McCarthy failed again to ban capital punishment as the Illinois Senate, by a 25 to 31 vote, did not pass a bill to end or moratorium the death penalty. GOP Sens. Merritt Little and Hudson Sours backed the measure amid Democratic defections and opposition from FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover and Chicago police officials. A later note covers Royalton resident James Blazine earning a master of arts degree at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary.
