Daley Defeated as Senate Panel Rejects City Sales Tax
Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley suffered a second rebuff when the Senate Revenue Committee rejected a bill to double the half cent city sales tax. The measure, identical to the House passed proposal, failed on party-line votes, 10 to 7 against in committee. Daley, the lead witness, argued the tax would be permissive and only in cities where badly needed, with support from Downstate officials and local associations.

Legal counsel John Rendleman charged the SIU bias claim as unfounded and unresponsive to evidence heard at a Springfield hearing. SIU President Morris unavailable for comment, while Board chair John Page Wham said he would study the report before responding.
