Marion Council Delays Budget Over Sales Tax Question

Marion Mayor Robert Cooksey said a special council meeting will set the annual appropriation ordinance. Action hinges on the state Legislature vote on a proposed half-cent sales tax for cities, which would fund about 90000 yearly and affect possible employee raises. Laborers seek higher wages, with officials noting raises may force job cuts if funds run out. Cooksey opposes a wheel tax unless approved by referendum, citing street funds and salary needs.
