Gov. Jim Thompson and acting state mental health director Robert DeVito announced Bowen Children's Center in Harrisburg will move from 262 to 266 authorized employees and gain four health technician trainees. Carbondale Feud Over Humane Society Contract Price
Carbondale officials clash with the Humane Society of Southern Illinois over funding. The city balks at paying $12,000 yearly for shelter services, after paying $6,295 last year for 1,135 animals. City Manager Carroll Fry urges negotiation while Eugenia Hunter says the price is not negotiable. Hunter extends the dog intake deadline, saying the board restricts price talks. If unresolved, the city will seek other options. The Humane Society charges $2 per day up to seven days and $6 for euthanasia if no home is found within a week.
