Illinois officials report nearly 4 900 child abuse cases from July 1975 to March 1976, up from 2 026 the prior year. Cook County leads with 2 774 cases. reporting includes 1 799 beating, 1 769 neglect, 400+ multiple abuse, 142 burns, and 118 malnutrition cases. Mothers most often named as abusers, followed by fathers and both parents.
