Teachers with contracts lose jobless pay, Ford amends law
Public school teachers with signed contracts for fall term cannot receive SUA unemployment benefits. Those without contracts but with prior teaching this year may still collect weekly benefits. President Ford signed the amendment June 13, closing the loophole that allowed paid summer unemployment for teachers under SUA. Areas report rising teacher claims, with nearly 4,500 applications across several counties, though under the new rule only those without contracts remain eligible.
