Illinois announces record 791 million road program for 1976
Transportation Secretary Langhorne Bond unveiled a 791 million Illinois roadbuilding plan for fiscal 1976, up 23 percent, aided by 332 million released federal funds. He said only a new 200 million highway bond authorization, likely controversial, can unlock much of the federal money. The plan funds widening and resurfacing over 600 miles of two lane routes and 157 bridges, shifts away from the 1650 mile supplemental freeway, with delays blamed on federal red tape and lawsuits. Interstate contracts rise to 219 million, nearly double last year’s 109 million.

Romulus Little League tussle over athletic supporter rule
In Romulus Michigan eight year old Nancy Winnard fights a league rule requiring athletic supporters for players. Her parents hire lawyer Joseph Walsh to pursue court action arguing the rule targets girls and violates civil rights. The league and coach insist safety and consistency with national rules. Nancy wears a tea cup in protest, while another girl is already required to comply. The dispute risks a legal ruling if no compromise is reached.

SIU fund bill delayed by House committee
Lindsay-Schaub News Service reports SIU's $108 million appropriation request was held over by the House Appropriations Committee to allow consultation on a 6 percent cut to General Revenue Fund allocations without harming system operations. The panel recalled other educational appropriations approved last Wednesday after Gov. Walker urged the cut. SIU would lose about $5.3 million of its $95 million request. Rep. Clyde Choate pressed the recall. SIU officials had not yet evaluated the impact of the proposed cut.

Press problem delays paper on Southern IllinoisNews
Gear on the press caused late delivery of many copies of the Southern Illinois Thursday. Leader Thomas P. ONeill Jr. said repair came late Thursday. ONeill noted a White House meeting showed conciliation in the air and Ford aims to move an energy bill with Congress despite administration and lawmakers’ disputes. Zarb warned a national energy program requires cooperation with Congress. ONeill said House Republicans have not been urged to defeat the measure itself.
