Dominican Red Threat Still Strong

Latin American expert Jack Hood Vaughn warned that a substantial Communist threat remains in the Dominican Republic and could spark new uprisings in various areas. he cited hidden arms and rebels in strong points and estimated Communist strength nearer 5,000 than 1,200. He noted $20 million in U.S. aid, a distant path to elections, and ties to Havana talks as part of a broader regional pattern. Demonstrators supported the junta regime with anti Communist rallies, calling to sweep out Red influence, while rebels planned a mass meeting marking the sixth anniversary of a failed Cuban invasion.
