Illinois pioneer judge and statehood advocate Nathaniel Pope
In 1818 the Illinois Territorial Legislature asked Nathaniel Pope to petition Congress for statehood. Pope, born 1794 in Louisville, moved to Kaskaskia and served as Illinois district judge from 1819 to 1850. He steered the statehood bill through Congress, expanding Illinois northern boundary to 42 degrees 30 minutes, creating a 60 mile wide strip that now holds about 60 percent of the state’s population and linking interests with Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York via Lake Michigan.
