Bethlehem Steel Defends 3 Percent Price Rise
Bethlehem Steel Corp announces a 3 percent increase for mill products starting July 30. White House inflation adviser Robert Strauss calls it a first-rate example of corporate citizenship and says it may set a pattern for others. The company expects no further rises in 1978 barring unforeseen events as inflation pressures ease. Steel costs rise about 11 percent since January.

Six concurrent prison terms for Nelson in six child deaths
Simon Peter Nelson, 46, was sentenced today to six concurrent 100 to 200 year terms for killing his six children. Parole possible after 10 years. Judge John S. Ghent imposed the sentence after a jury convicted Nelson of stabbing and bludgeoning the children on January 7. The jury could not decide on a death penalty, and Nelson chose the old statutes, which allow parole after a decade, though the newer Class X option could have meant life without parole.

Schlafly Sees Value in a Modified ERA
Phyllis Schlafly, Stop ERA chair, says she could accept a modified ERA that guarantees existing women’s rights and allows rational differences between men and women. She opposes a rigid absolute ERA and cites protection against military draft and same sex marriage as key concerns. A Illinois news conference followed by lobbying by ERA opponents. A separate campaign poll for Sen. Charles Percy shows 54 percent in favor of ratification and 50 percent supporting extending the deadline, with energy concerns topping voter worries.
