Bakalis and Thompson spar over Illinois budget
Illinois gubernatorial contenders Gov. James Thompson and challenger Michael Bakalis clashed in a televised debate on state spending. Bakalis accused the budget of waste and gimmicks, while Thompson warned of added local tax burdens and a debtful plan. They praised the debate but claimed no winner. A related dispute included off track betting, tax rebates, and a delay on a Cost Control Task Force report. A Carter telegram supported Bakalis, as ERA pickets gathered outside the WTTW studio.
