Fire escapes proposal rejected by Zeigler Royalton Board
Zeigler Royalton Unit School Board rejected Supt Roy Belcher s plan to install fire escape steps at Leiter School. Instead the board will maintain a inverted metal tube fire escape with repairs as needed. Budget figures were not discussed.

Shawnee council granted nearly three times request
Shawnee Development Council received a $69,988 federal grant for emergency medical and food services across Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski and Union counties. The original 18 month request was $25,000. Executive director Lewis Walker said the increase serves about 2,700 people, avoiding cuts to 700 or 800 residents.

Logan Board selects new director and two faculty hires
John A. Logan Board of Trustees named Robert H. Irvan as director of vocational technical and adult education. Irvan, 40, from Mt Carmel, holds a bachelor’s from Illinois and a master’s from Indiana State, with 19 years’ experience and a $14 000 annual salary starting in June. Don Boehne, 129 Carbondale, will teach psychology at $9 600 with five years’ experience and degrees from Southeast Missouri State and SIU. George A. Williams, 26 Marion, will teach welding at $9 000 with five years’ experience and a SIU bachelor’s degree while pursuing graduate work.

Top SIU seniors feted for academic excellence awards
SIU Foundation honored the two top ranking graduates at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Jean Marjorie Wharton, 22, and Steven Martin Andes, 21, each received a $50 prize and a plaque. Wharton, a music education major from Carbondale, is the daughter of music professor John Wharton. Andes, a government major from Chicago, is the son of Samuel Irving and spouse.
